The GardenThe property has been in the Stroud family for 50 years. David's parents came here in 1949. Esmae and David married in 1964 and came back to the family home in 1969. Then it was a three bedroom colonial villa with a narrow garden separated from the Halcombe Road by a paddock. Thyme-out garden started development in 1990, except for three trees in the front of the house. The garden comprises of a formal rose garden, a number of garden rooms of built up gardens with shrubs and annuals. There is a pond and a shingle garden below the pond. The main feature is a ha ha that fronts a large open lawn. The panoramic view over the lawn is of the rolling countryside with the Main Trunk Railway line crossing the view in the distance. About an acre of native bush has been developed with a walking track. |
The Gardener Both David & Esmae are the gardeners. David is mainly in charge of the lawn and Esmae is mainly in charge of the planting. Everything else is a joint effort. They both developed the garden as a retirement hobby while they were still running a Saddlery shop in Feilding. The main frame of the garden was developed while they were relatively young so that most of the heavier work was done. The gardening that is done now is less demanding. They do not employ anybody else to help in the garden. |
