The GardenWelcome! Burr-wood is set in a 21/2 acre well known garden and surrounded by native bush. [Kaimai Ranges] An elevated situation, we overlook a panorama of land, sea, harbour and islands from top of Waihi beach to Eastcape. Truly spectacular. The garden consists of 4 levels with a short gentle slope between each. The house level. 'The terraces' has cottage type gardens, a rhododendron and camellia walk and the vegetable garden.
The 2nd 'The Ladies Mile'. has long perennial beds roses [mostly David Austin] shrubs and trees- almost park like. The rest is the 'Proteacae Walk'.
3rd 'The Pond Complex' Has a series of ponds surrounded by garden as the main feature.
4th 'The Last Furlong' is devoted to Natives that don't grow naturally in our area, some rare. Walk along that and come back up through the Hosta Walk. The garden is tranquil and romantic. Each level is surrounded by native bush giving continuity and bird life.

The GardenerMaureen and Alan ex farmers, bought the weed filled land in 1993. Alan built the house while Maureen developed the garden. Lines blurred with painting, wallpapering and heavy removal needed in the garden.
Friends say' you name it its there in our garden'. They say 'Not quite true but there is a variety'
Roses, perennials, protea, maples, rhodos, camellia, azaleas, natives, dahlias, to name a few. In the small nursery there are plants from the garden.
Alan has been making the native timber jewellery for 40 years. He also makes sets of native timber onions.
Their hobbies are fishing [Alan] and cake decorating[Maureen] when not in the garden or workshop. |
