The Garden

If you want to know how to take your garden with you when you move come and visit Valeside and we can show you how to do it.

This garden is made up completely of a plant collection from Valeside Gardens at 266 Point View Drive. We developed the garden over a 17 year span.

We moved to Cockle Bay in December 09 along with hundreds of plants which were potted up over several months into large containers.

They are plants we could not bare to leave behind, we could call it a garden on the move. They will stay in there containers for now.

The new court yard garden had only 5 trees, 3 large Queen Palms, a 70 year old Maple and an Olive tree.
We have grouped the plants into areas in and around the trees. Then piled mulch up around the containers to retain moisture.

We have then poked things in every where between the containers so it looks like a garden bed.

The garden is completely private from the street, with a very tropical and intimate feel, which makes it perfect for small weddings/celebrations/birthdays/lunches etc.

The Gardener

Hi from Jacquelyn Jamieson (nee Ludlam) the originator of this “Gardens to Visit” Website. I am a Stratford Taranaki girl, who caught my passion for gardening from my father Jack Ludlam. All 5 generations of the New Zealand Ludlam's worked with the land and fed their families from extensive vegetable patches. I still can’t look at broad beans! As a hairdresser who trained in Christchurch I was taught the elements of design and how to turn something ordinary into something quite spectacular. It was only a small step to transfer these principles into the world of gardens and landscaping. In Auckland I turned a sloping windswept 1.5 acres on Point View Drive into the well known “Valeside” with rock features, paths, subtropical's, a fernery, banks of succulents, orchids and specimen trees. This property has now been sold and I am currently re-establishing my garden in pots & tubs in Howick.

The daisy. In olden times it was reputed to be an unfailing remedy for aches and pains, fevers and liver complaints, it was made into ointments, tinctures and decoctions.
Frangipani are a woody deciduous tree needing careful attention when growing. The cream and white flowering are the most scented but mine are pink flowering.
Aspidistra elatior. Old classical Japanese cultivar of cast iron plant now very rare, with large, broad leaves, spreading, with many types of irregular white variegation: striped, frosted, streaked and occasionally margined. The variegation is white, cream or pale yellow. No two leaves are the same.
