Hurunui Garden Festival

Our gardens range from Amberley in the south, through the Waipara Gorge with its striking limestone formations, to the beautifully rolling hills and productive farmland of Hawarden, Waikari, Culverden, Rotherham then through to Cheviot and/or Hanmer Springs.

Overview

31st October to 3 November 2024.

Welcome to the 6th annual Hurunui Garden Festival, we are looking forward to seeing you in our 18 gorgeous gardens.

We showcase a range of stunning North Canterbury gardens, each as diverse as their owners.

From the intimate and whimsical to the grand and formal, we can show you sweeping views, lush spilling herbaceous borders, naturalist planting, dry gardens, grand avenues, cosy seating areas, cool shade gardens… there is something to inspire every gardener.

Our gardeners may be amateurs… but there is no lack of passion and knowledge in this festival and you have the opportunity to meet them all at their properties.

The Gardener

The Hurunui Garden Festival was launched early in 2018 by a group of local garden owners who wanted to assist with the Hurunui District’s recovery from the devastating earthquake of November 2016. The concept was to open gardens and invite visitors, particularly from outside the district, to spend a weekend enjoying the gardens and other attractions of the Hurunui District. The Festival would create opportunities and benefits for businesses and residents across the district. More than a celebration of inspirational gardens, the Hurunui Garden Festival would be a district-wide promotion of the many attractions and warm hospitality in the region.

Garden Size

Properties include large country gardens, residential gardens, historic homesteads, art studios and collections throughout the Hurunui. The gardens are arranged into geographical clusters, making it easy to plan your visit to multiple gardens. Each has its detailed map, showing you the location of the gardens, along with useful information, such as the locations of public toilets, accommodation, petrol and diesel stations, and food outlets.

Other Facilities

On our website are all the details of each garden, plus the many events, workshops and tours, food outlets, accommodation options plus much more.
